BITRI Inspires Future Scientists at Baitirile Community Junior Secondary School Study Camp

As part of its commitment to fostering scientific curiosity and promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education among young people, the Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI) participated in the official opening of the Baitirile Community Junior Secondary School (CJSS) Form 3 Study Camp.

Held under the theme “The Final Stretch. Finish Strong. Finish First.”, the event brought together educators, community leaders, industry representatives and professionals from various sectors to motivate learners as they prepare for their Junior Certificate Examinations.

Representing BITRI, Associate Researcher Ms Phatsimo Matshediso delivered a keynote address that challenged learners to dream beyond their current circumstances and embrace education as a pathway to personal growth, innovation, and national development. Drawing from her own journey of growing up in Moshupa to becoming a scientist and researcher, she encouraged learners to believe in their potential, remain committed to their studies and pursue excellence despite challenges.

Ms Matshediso emphasised that scientific curiosity begins with asking questions and encouraged them to consider careers in STEM. She reminded them that Botswana’s future depends on young people who are prepared to solve real-world challenges through science, technology, and innovation.

“Your background is your beginning, not your boundary. Your village is your foundation, not your limitation. Your determination will shape your destination.”

The motivation session highlighted the importance of cultivating an interest in STEM from an early age. By interacting with scientists and professionals, learners gained first-hand insight into how education can open doors to careers in research, technology, engineering, and entrepreneurship. Such engagements help young people recognise that scientific knowledge can be transformed into innovative solutions that improve lives, create employment, and contribute to Botswana’s socio-economic development.

The outreach also reflects BITRI’s commitment to taking science beyond the laboratory and into communities. As Botswana’s national research and technology organisation, BITRI recognises that building a knowledge-based economy begins by inspiring young people to pursue STEM careers. Through engagements such

as these, the Institute is helping to cultivate the next generation of researchers, innovators and problem-solvers who will contribute to Botswana’s sustainable development.

Beyond inspiring learners academically, the engagement strengthened the relationship between BITRI and the community, demonstrating the Institute’s commitment to ensuring that research and innovation create meaningful impact beyond the laboratory. Community outreach provides an opportunity to share knowledge, mentor future innovators and encourage learners to see science not only as a subject in the classroom but as a tool for solving societal challenges and improving livelihoods.
