Position: Board Member
Mr. Papiso B. Makwati has been appointed the Board Member of the Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI) with effect from the 1st of July 2025.
Mr. Makwati is an experienced Legal and Governance practitioner with over 19 years of professional experience in diverse environments. Mr. Makwati has been extensively trained in Corporate Governance of academic institutions, parastatals, and companies. He is currently the Director Legal Services & Governance at the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST). He previously worked for the Attorney General (AG) as a State Counsel in the Civil Litigation and International Commercial Division. In 2011, he was seconded to Legal Aid Botswana by the AG to help set up and spearhead an educational programme to facilitate the rollout of Legal Aid to Batswana. Additionally, he served as Regulatory Compliance Manager and Privatisation Project Manager at Botswana Telecommunications Corporation Limited (BTCL) over the period covering the listing of the company on the Botswana Stock Exchange.
Mr. Makwati holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Botswana, and a Master of Laws from the University of Stellenbosch. In addition, he holds various certificates, including Management Development Programme, Telecommunications Policy, Regulation and Management and an International Commercial Arbitration certificate.
With his leadership qualities and relevant management training, Mr. Makwati brings to the BITRI Board a wealth of corporate governance insights that will assist the governing structure/s to focus and effectively deliver on their strategic mandate.
