Energy Division

Energy Division

The primary goal of energy research is to address global energy challenges. This involves developing new technologies, improving existing ones, and formulating effective policies to guide energy transitions. The BITRI Energy Division focuses on needs-based research, development, and adoption of Energy technologies (renewable and non–renewable) for Botswana. In addition to research and development, the division also offers training and consultancy on energy related technologies.

Our goal is to accelerate Botswana’s energy transition through applied R&D, systems analysis, and realworld deployment of both renewable and nonrenewable technologies.

DECARBONISING BITRI - BITRI SOLAR PV PROJECT

DECARBONISING BITRI - BITRI SOLAR PV PROJECT

BITRI has implemented a 500 kWp Solar PV system combining rooftop, carport, and tracker installations to cut carbon emissions and reduce operational costs. The system is grid-connected with diesel backup, generates 820 MWh annually (covering about 70% of BITRI’s energy needs), and includes EV charging capabilities. This project demonstrates the viability of renewable, cost-effective energy solutions for existing buildings in Botswana.

SOLAR ENERGY LIVING LAB

The Solar Energy Living Lab serves as a hub for testing, research, and collaboration in renewable energy. It provides compliance assessments, technology validation, and real-environment prototype trials supported by localized climate data. The centre drives innovation through user-centred design, behavioural research, and industry co-creation, while also offering training, policy support, and knowledge-sharing platforms. As a networking and development hub, it empowers stakeholders and local entrepreneurs to accelerate solar adoption in Botswana. Read More
