Clean Energy Tech

The Clean Energy Research Cluster focuses on needs-based research, development, and adoption of clean energy technologies for Botswana, while also optimising existing solutions. Our projects are closely aligned with national strategies, development plans, and emerging priorities, ensuring that our work directly supports Botswana’s growth and sustainability goals.

Energy Policy & Planning

We aim to be the go-to institution for energy planning and policy, building local expertise in energy economics and modelling to inform decision-making. Our team develops domestic planning models, continuously analyses the costs and value of energy services, and delivers insights that shape national policies.

  • Projects: National Energy Use Survey, Energy Modelling for the Integrated Resource Plan, Real-Time Energy Finance and Markets Analysis.

Energy Security of Supply Through research and development, we focus on innovative storage solutions and power systems optimisation to ensure a reliable, efficient energy supply for Botswana.
  • Projects: Hydrogen as a Storage Solution, Sodium-Ion Battery Development, Power Systems Efficiency Optimisation.

Energy Management

We develop solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from energy production and use, while promoting demand-side efficiency.

  • Projects: Decarbonising BITRI, Automated Smart Building Peak Demand Analysis & Control.
Renewable Energy Our renewable energy research covers solar and wind technologies, quality assurance for solar systems, and mapping of energy resources for optimal deployment.
  • Projects: Solar Thermal Testing Facility, Decarbonisation of BITRI, Wind & Solar Resource Mapping.

Needs-Based Research

We respond to public and industry needs with applied research that enhances existing technologies and develops new ones to improve everyday life.

  • Projects: Efficient Woodstove Development, Decarbonisation of Tlokweng SOS, Biogas for Cooking, Lighting & Heating.
